Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Guam?

This is a common question for first-time visitors, since many other destinations do require an International Driving Permit. In Guam, we accept your original driver’s license as-is. When you pick up your car, please bring your driver’s license, a credit card, and your passport. This policy applies across all our brands.

Is there a minimum age to rent a car?

You can rent a car with us from age 18. Many rental companies on the US mainland charge an extra "young driver fee" for drivers under 25, but we do not add any age-based surcharge. If you are 18 or older, your rate will not be higher because of your age. Students and families traveling with younger drivers can rent without any extra paperwork.

Which side of the road do people drive on in Guam?

Guam follows the same traffic rules as the US mainland: vehicles are driven on the right side of the road, with the steering wheel on the left side of the car. If you are used to driving on the left, take a few minutes to get comfortable before setting off — turning at intersections and changing lanes will feel different at first. Driving in an unfamiliar environment carries some risk of a minor accident, so we recommend adding CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) coverage for peace of mind.

What do I need to bring to rent a car?

Please bring three things when you pick up your car: your driver’s license, a credit card, and your passport. Your home-country driver’s license is fine as-is. Your credit card should be Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or Diners Club, and must be in the driver’s own name. If the driver and the person paying are the same person, one passport is enough. If the driver and payer are different people, both of you will need to bring your passports — this often comes up with families or groups of friends traveling together. Please double-check that you have all three items before you leave home, since we may not be able to serve you on the day if anything is missing.

What if the driver and the person paying are different people?

On group or family trips, it’s common for one person to drive while someone else (say, the trip organizer) pays. In that case, both the driver and the payer need to bring their passports. The credit card used for payment should be in the driver’s own name as a rule. If the driver doesn’t have a credit card, an additional driver fee will apply, so please confirm in advance whose card will be used. If more than one person may drive, please also register them as an additional driver. Without that registration, insurance coverage will not apply if there’s an accident.

Is there a fee to cancel my reservation?

If you cancel by 1 hour before your pickup time, there is no cancellation fee at all. Travel plans often change because of flights, so you don’t need to worry about cost if you cancel with reasonable notice. You can cancel using the instructions in your booking confirmation email. If you’re short on time before departure, please contact our office directly.

How do I change my reservation?

To change the vehicle class or dates on your booking, please cancel your current reservation and make a new one with the details you want. Cancellation itself is free up until 1 hour before pickup, so there’s no cost to making a change. You can cancel using the link in your booking confirmation email. If your pickup is coming up soon and you’re not sure how to do this yourself, please call our office and we’ll help you directly.

How can I pay for my rental?

Payment is by credit card only, made locally in Guam. We accept Visa, Mastercard, Diners Club, and Discover. We do not take payment in advance in your home country. The card should be in the driver’s own name as a rule. A $100 deposit will also be charged to the same card at pickup. It’s refunded once you return the car in good condition.

Can I pay with cash or a debit card?

We cannot accept cash (in any currency), debit cards, prepaid credit cards, or traveler’s checks. This is standard practice in the car rental industry — credit card payment lets us reliably secure the deposit in case of damage or an accident. If your card is a debit or prepaid card, please be sure to bring a separate credit card before you travel.

How much is the deposit?

A $100 deposit is charged to your credit card when you pick up the car. This deposit secures the condition of the vehicle during your rental. It’s refunded after you return the car in good condition — as long as there’s no damage, it’s not an extra cost to you. Since there can be a delay between the charge and the refund, we recommend leaving a bit of extra room on your credit card limit while you travel.

Whose name does the credit card need to be in?

The credit card used for payment should be in the name of the person actually driving the car. If the driver doesn’t have a credit card, we’ll guide you through paying an additional driver fee instead. Not everyone in a family or group has their own card, so it helps to confirm whose card will be used before you arrive. We cannot accept a copy or photo of a credit card — please bring the physical card.

I’ve landed at Guam Airport — how do I get to your office?

We’re sorry, but we don’t offer an airport pickup service, so please take a taxi to our office. It’s about 1.8 miles (2.8 km) from Guam International Airport to our Tumon office — roughly a 10-minute taxi ride costing around $20. A tip of 10–15% of the fare is customary. Is there a discount for arriving by taxi from the airport?

Yes — guests who arrive by taxi from the airport receive $15 cashback off their rental. It’s simple: just show your taxi receipt at the counter when you check in. Without a receipt we can’t apply the discount, so please hold onto it when you get out of the taxi. This can’t be combined with other discounts. Since we don’t operate an airport counter and rely on guests arriving by taxi, this cashback is how we pass the savings on to you.

Do you offer pickup from my hotel?

After I return the car, can you take me to the airport?

Accepted Answer

Yes — after you return your car, we drive you to Guam International Airport free of charge. While we ask guests to arrive by taxi (we don’t offer airport pickup), the return trip is the opposite: our own shuttle takes you to the airport at no cost. Combined with the $15 taxi cashback on the way in, this keeps your travel costs down overall. We’ll time the shuttle to your flight, so please let our staff know your departure time when you return the car.

Do I need a child seat? What types are available?

Guam law requires a different type of child seat depending on your child’s age and height. Specifically: an Infant Seat for ages 0–1 (or up to 9 kg), a Child Seat for ages 1–4 (or 9–18 kg), and a Booster Seat for ages 4–11 (up to 145 cm tall). Please use the type appropriate for your child. You’ll need to install the child seat yourself. If you’re not sure how, our staff are happy to help at pickup. Please return the child seat to the counter when you return the car.

Does someone other than the main renter need to register to drive?

If anyone other than the main renter will be driving, please register them as an additional driver. If you skip this step, insurance coverage will not apply in the event of an accident. This is easy to overlook when couples or friends plan to take turns driving, so we recommend registering everyone who might drive at pickup. Additional drivers need a valid driver’s license, just like the main renter.

Can I bring my pet in the car?

We’re sorry, but as a rule we don’t allow pets in our vehicles. This is out of consideration for the next guest who rents the car, in case they have an animal allergy. We know this is disappointing if you’re traveling with a pet, and we appreciate your understanding.

What should I do about fuel when I return the car?

Accepted Answer

We hand over your car with a full tank, so please stop at a nearby gas station and fill it up before you return the car. Please bring the gas station receipt with you. If the tank isn’t full when you return the car, we’ll charge a set conversion fee based on our own rate table. Filling up yourself is usually cheaper, since you only pay the actual cost of the gas. What if I can’t make it back in time?

If sightseeing runs long and you won’t make your scheduled return time, please contact our office in advance. Returning late without letting us know is treated as a breach of the rental agreement, and you’ll be responsible for any resulting costs. If you think you might be even a little late, please let us know as soon as possible — an overtime fee will apply for the extension.

How do I pump gas at a Guam gas station?

Most gas stations in Guam are self-service. Here’s a step-by-step guide. First, park at a pump marked "Self Serve." Full-service pumps ("Full Serve") cost more since staff pump the gas for you, so choose self-service. Pick the green pump handle labeled "Unleaded" (regular gasoline). Tell a nearby staff member or the register your pump number and say "fill it up." Open your fuel door, remove the cap, take the nozzle off the pump, and lift the lever that holds it in place — you’re ready to go. Insert the nozzle into your tank and squeeze the handle to start the flow. The pump will stop automatically as the tank gets close to full, but this is just the sensor reacting — the tank isn’t completely full yet. Squeeze the handle again 3–5 more times to top it off, then return the nozzle to the pump. Pay at the pump or inside (1 gallon = about 3.8 liters). Gas prices change often, so we can’t quote a price in advance — please check on-site. We’ll point out a nearby gas station when you pick up your car.

Is insurance included in the rental price?

Yes, your rental price includes basic Liability Protection (LP) insurance. Coverage is up to $100,000 per person / $300,000 per accident for bodily injury, and up to $50,000 per accident for property damage. This covers damage you cause to other people or their property in an accident, and it’s already built into your rate — no separate sign-up needed. This insurance only covers the other party, though — it doesn’t cover repairs to the car you’re driving. For that, we recommend adding CDW (Collision Damage Waiver), covered next.

Should I add CDW coverage?

We strongly recommend adding CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) when you rent with us in Guam. CDW caps your liability for repairs to the rental car itself (up to $50,000 in repair costs) at a $1,000 deductible. Guam’s traffic rules differ in some ways from what you may be used to, and driving in an unfamiliar environment carries some risk of a minor accident — CDW gives you peace of mind on the road. This coverage applies to collisions between vehicles where both sides have a driver present. We cover the cases where it doesn’t apply in the next item.

When does CDW not apply?

CDW covers a wide range of accidents, but there are some situations it doesn’t cover. These include: reckless or dangerous driving, using a phone or other device while driving, hitting an object while driving, new damage caused by abandoning the vehicle, a total loss caused by negligence, using the car after it was stolen, failing to report an accident, failing to get the other driver’s plate number or the other vehicle being unregistered, the other driver not having a valid license, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. All of these are avoidable with normal safe driving — obey the speed limit, never drive under the influence, and report any accident to police right away, and your CDW coverage will apply as expected.

What is ZDW (Zero Deductible Waiver)?

ZDW (Zero Deductible Waiver) is extra coverage for guests who already have CDW. Even with CDW, you’re still responsible for up to $1,000 if there’s an accident. Adding ZDW waives that deductible entirely. In short: CDW alone caps your cost at $1,000, while CDW plus ZDW brings your out-of-pocket cost to zero. ZDW can’t be purchased on its own — it’s only available to guests who also add CDW. For a small extra cost, it can bring your worst-case expense down to nothing, so we recommend it alongside CDW.

What is NOC (loss-of-use coverage)?

Accepted Answer

NOC covers the "non-operation charge" — a fee for the business loss we incur when a damaged car can’t be rented out to the next guest. This charge applies regardless of how minor the damage is or how long repairs take: $250 if the car is still drivable and can be rented in its current condition, or $400 if it can’t be driven or rented at all. Adding NOC removes this $250–$400 charge. If you want to minimize unexpected costs after an accident, we recommend adding it alongside CDW and ZDW. Note that the $150 accident processing fee (covered next) applies regardless of whether you have NOC.

What fees apply if I have an accident?

Accepted Answer

If you’re involved in an accident, a $150 accident processing fee applies regardless of who is at fault. This covers the paperwork involved with police, the insurance company, and the repair shop. It applies even if the accident wasn’t your fault, so it’s worth knowing about in advance. On top of that, repair costs (which vary depending on your CDW/ZDW coverage) and a non-operation charge (waived if you have NOC, otherwise $250–$400) may also apply. Full insurance coverage keeps these unexpected costs to a minimum.

What situations are not covered by insurance at all?

Even with coverage, the following situations are not covered, and any resulting damage will be your responsibility. This includes: reckless or drunk driving, using a phone or other device while driving, broken windows, theft or vandalism, damage caused by a driver who wasn’t registered on the contract, and traffic fines plus their $100 service fee. New damage found on return also incurs a $150 accident processing fee, regardless of how minor it is. It also excludes towing costs after an accident, leaving the scene of an accident, damage or loss of tires, wheels, wheel covers, or keys (plus their service fee), any accident or damage not reported to police within 24 hours (with no incident number), and damage from natural disasters like typhoons. What these all have in common is that they’re avoidable with normal safe driving and the right response afterward, like reporting promptly to police. Following the basic rules keeps your drive worry-free.
