Long-Term Car Rental

Staying longer than a holiday

Guam Rent-A-Car Center puts the island's rental companies on one screen. Most of what goes through it is a few days long. A steady share is not — a contract, a posting, a build, a semester — and a car is needed for the whole of it.

Long-term car rental on Guam runs on a flat thirty-day rate. It is set once for the month, and it is a long way below what the same car costs booked a day at a time.

Sedans

The default for a long stay. Easiest to park along the Tumon strip, and the cheapest of the three to keep fueled.

Mini SUV

The extra height and cargo space earn their keep once there are children, dive gear, or a monthly run to the warehouse stores.

Pickup

A bed for lumber, a move between apartments, a surfboard that will not go inside anything. Plenty take one because they would rather be driving a truck.

Who takes a car by the month

A posting or a contract

A year at a clinic, six months on the buildup, a semester teaching. The stay has an end date, but it is not measured in days.

A car in the shop

Parts come by ship. A repair that would take a few days on the mainland can hold a vehicle for weeks here, and nothing about the school run changes while it waits.

Waiting on a car of your own

Buying is not usually the hold-up here — a common model can be had quickly enough. The wait comes when the vehicle has to be ordered in, or when the decision itself is not ready to be made. A monthly rental covers either.

Work that changes shape

Crews arrive, projects move, headcount in March is not what it was in January. Renting by the month lets the number of cars follow the work rather than the other way around.

Between homes

Relocations rarely land cleanly. A monthly car covers the stretch when the container, the lease and the start date are all still moving.

A long stay that is not work

A season with family, a few months of diving, a long stretch between jobs. The rate does not ask why.

What the monthly rate already covers

Liability insurance — personal and property, included rather than sold at the counter.

Unlimited mileage — no cap and no per-mile charge, so living in Yigo and working in Tumon costs the same as staying next to the counter.

Taxes and fees — in the figure above, not added to it.

Hotel pick-up — free, which matters most in the first week, before anywhere is home yet.

Counters open around the clock — and free cancellation up to an hour before pick-up.

What you are not taking on

Buying a car for a stay that ends is a lot of commitment for a temporary problem.

No loan, no down payment

One rate a month, and nothing tied up in the vehicle.

No lease application, no credit screening

It is a rental, not a finance agreement. A driver's license, a credit card in the driver's name and a passport or ID are what you bring. A license issued in your own country is accepted — no international permit needed.

No servicing to arrange

Maintenance, registration and inspections stay on our side of the counter.

Nothing to sell at the end

On an island, getting rid of a car is harder than buying one. You hand back the keys instead.

Compare before you commit

Over three days, a few dollars between companies barely registers. Over three months it is the difference between one class of car and the next one up. The rates here sit side by side and book on the same screen, so a long stay can be priced the same way a weekend is.
