Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Guam?

In most cases, no. Under Guam law, a valid driver's license from Japan, South Korea, the Republic of China (Taiwan), EU countries, Canada, New Zealand, the Philippines, Australia, Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia or the Marshall Islands can be used for up to 30 days after you arrive. A valid license from a U.S. state, territory or commonwealth is good for up to 90 days. You don't need an International Driving Permit (IDP) with these licenses, and an IDP can't replace your original license, so don't leave your license at home and bring only an IDP.

If you're an active-duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces stationed on Guam, or a dependent, you don't need a Guam license as long as you carry a valid license from another U.S. state, territory or commonwealth (16 GCA §3101(b)). The rental office's usual age, payment and authorized-driver rules still apply.

If your license was issued somewhere that isn't on the list above, don't assume the 30-day rule for Taiwan and the other listed places covers you. Check with the Guam Department of Revenue and Taxation (DRT) and with the rental office before you travel.

At pickup, bring your original driver's license, a credit card and your passport.

Planning to drive longer than your 30- or 90-day allowance? Guam law lets you register your license with DRT to extend your driving privilege, generally until one year after you arrive or until your license expires, whichever comes first. If you expect a long stay, contact DRT well before your first period runs out.

These rules are the same no matter which rental company you book on this site.
