If
you rent a car when you visit Guam, you can enjoy the island even more. Being
able to go wherever you want, at your own pace, makes your trip to Guam much
more fulfilling. This time, I’ll introduce you to a gourmet spot you can visit with
a rental car. However, it’s not a restaurant. It’s the deli section of a local
supermarket.
This
is the Payless Supermarket in Maite, located in Barrigada, an area behind the
Guam International Airport from the Tumon side. Payless Supermarket is a large
chain with eight stores in Guam, and the Barrigada store opened in 2019. It is
one of the largest Payless stores, offering a wide range of daily necessities
with a focus on groceries, and it sees many visitors every day.
The
highlight of this store when it opened was the Market Deli section. The deli
features a variety of dishes and freshly baked bread prepared in the kitchen at
the back, which whets the appetite of shoppers.
Popular
items include lunch boxes available from Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m., where you can choose one or two of about ten different dishes (one dish
for $10.40, two dishes for $12.49, with rice). The selection includes
Guam-style BBQ, Chamorro dishes, and fish dishes, providing a hearty and varied
meal.
Here
is the Breakfast Plate ($8.99), which is available early in the morning. It
includes rice, eggs, and meat, a classic Guam breakfast.
Both
options are perfect for a picnic if you’re heading out for a drive around the
island. Find a favorite spot, like a seaside park or a scenic location, enjoy
Guam’s unique cuisine, and you’ll feel like a local in no time.
If
you’re feeling a little hungry, check out the sandwiches, pastries, and cakes.
The bread is freshly baked and fluffy, and while some cakes are quite sweet,
there are plenty of simple options that are easy for Japanese tastes, making
them great for snacks or breakfast.
After
a day of activities, if you’re heading back to your hotel, you can also pick up
some snacks for in-room dining. They offer a variety of ready-to-eat dishes
like poke, salads, and pickles (Guam-style pickles).
Conveniently,
next to the deli section is the alcohol aisle. You’ll find a selection of
chilled Guam and American craft beers, cocktails, and many types of wine. While
the selection isn’t vast, there are also some Japanese liquors and shochu
available. Load up on food and drinks, and you’ll have an instant in-room pub
experience.
There
are many ways to enjoy the well-stocked Market Deli. Depending on the time of
day and your hunger level, you can find something to satisfy your cravings.
Since it’s located in a supermarket, you can also customize your choices.
