The annual Autumn
Festival, hosted by the Japanese Association and traditionally held in
November, was moved this year to April, during the more comfortable dry season,
so that everyone could enjoy it in pleasant weather. It took place as a Spring
Festival on Saturday, April 12th at Ypao Beach Park.
Despite the event being scheduled to start at 2:00 PM, Ypao Park was already filled with many festival enthusiasts and buzzing with excitement due to anticipated congestion on the surrounding roads and in the parking areas!
The venue was
lined with classic Japanese festival booths, including food stalls with
mouth-watering aromas, as well as goldfish scooping and dazzling super
ball/doll scooping games that captivated the children!
With average
daytime temperatures ranging from 80°F to 86°F, measures against the heat were
definitely essential. People seeking a cool treat formed long lines at the
shaved ice booth.
The Yakitori booth, which has become known as “Yakitori” even overseas, also had a long line. Yakitori, which can be easily enjoyed with one hand, is a prime example of “walking food” perfect for savoring while strolling through the festival grounds. It really enhances the exciting atmosphere unique to festivals.
The children’s
eyes were glued to the goldfish! The most popular booth was undoubtedly the
goldfish scooping! The sight of them peering intently into the tanks with their
scoops in hand is truly a classic scene of this festival.
The Japanese garlic chili oil, which stimulates the appetite, was a new discovery as it also goes well with tacos, sushi, and rice balls. We were also selling other Japanese toppings that we definitely wanted the locals to try.
While the
festival’s excitement reaches its peak after sunset, even before then, visitors
can thoroughly enjoy Japan’s diverse culture throughout the park, from being
captivated by the judo demonstrations, a traditional Japanese martial art, to
being moved by the energetic taiko drum performances by children.
With their
adorable matching “happi” coats, the children’s energetic shouts of
“Wasshoi!” liven up the festival grounds with the children’s mikoshi
(portable shrine).
The charm of
Japanese festivals lies in being able to participate as well as watch! For
