Guam Has No Public Holiday in February

Scan Guam's government calendar and February is another month with no official holiday. Five months go without one all year — February, April, June, August, and October — and February is the first of them. But February comes with a wrinkle worth sorting out before we get to the fun part.

Some general-purpose calendar aggregator sites list the third Monday of February (February 16 in 2026) as a "Guam holiday": Washington's Birthday, often called Presidents' Day elsewhere. The short answer is that this is not a Government of Guam holiday.

Here's what's actually going on. Washington's Birthday is a U.S. federal holiday, set by federal law (5 U.S.C. § 6103), and federal offices on Guam — the District Court of Guam among them — do observe it. But the list of Government of Guam holidays published by both the Department of Revenue and Taxation (guamtax.com) and the Government of Guam Retirement Fund (GGRF) doesn't include a February date at all; their 2026 lineup runs Jan 1, Jan 19, Mar 2, May 25, Jul 3, Jul 21, Sep 7, Nov 2, Nov 11, Nov 26, Dec 8, and Dec 25 — twelve days, none in February. In other words, "federal holiday" and "Government of Guam holiday" are two different things, and DMV counters, rental car desks, and most local shops follow the latter. Several generic holiday-aggregator sites appear to simply copy the U.S. federal holiday calendar onto their "Guam" page without checking what GovGuam actually observes — the same kind of mix-up we found with Columbus Day, which some of those same sites still list for October even though Guam retired it back in 2017.

The upshot: expect government offices, rental car counters, and shops to run on their normal schedule in February. No holiday crowds, no closures to plan around.

Our Lady of Lourdes Fiesta, a Northern Village Celebration

No holiday doesn't mean no event. Every February, Guam's largest and northernmost village, Yigo, holds its biggest celebration of the year: the Our Lady of Lourdes Fiesta. In 2026 it falls on February 14, the second Saturday of the month, centered around Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church on Chalan Pale Ramon in Yigo.

As evening falls, a procession carries a statue of the Blessed Mother around the church grounds, accompanied by incense and the recitation of the rosary. The church is home to a grotto modeled on the one in Lourdes, France, decorated with fresh tropical flowers for the occasion — a place of prayer that draws visitors well beyond fiesta day. Afterward comes a full CHamoru feast: barbecued pork, chicken, and ribs, taro cooked in coconut milk, and rice cakes.

Yigo and the Memory of Guam's Liberation

The parish was established in 1920, giving residents a place to worship without traveling all the way to Hagåtña. In August 1944, the church was destroyed in fighting during the final phase of World War II in the Pacific. Yigo and the high ground of Mount Santa Rosa just north of it were where Japanese forces mounted their last organized resistance to the American liberation of the island; nearby Mataguac Hill, the site of that final stand, was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Guam was declared secure on August 10, 1944. So the memory behind Guam Liberation Day, observed every July 21, runs directly through this northern village too. The church itself was later rebuilt into the one that stands today. It's a nice parallel to October: just as visiting Humåtak in October evokes the memory of March's holiday (Guam History and Chamorro Heritage Day), visiting Yigo in February evokes the memory of July's holiday (Guam Liberation Day).

Earlier in the month, the valley village of Maina, in the island's west-central interior, holds its own Our Lady of Purification Fiesta — in 2026, around February 7, the first Saturday. Tied to the Catholic feast of the Presentation (Candlemas), it features a candle-blessing ceremony during Mass. It's a smaller, more family-oriented affair than Yigo's.

Exact fiesta dates are set by the church each year and can shift, so check the Guam Visitors Bureau's official site before you go.

February Weather and Driving Tips

February sits at the heart of Guam's dry season and is generally considered the driest, most comfortable month of the year. Daytime highs run roughly 24–29°C, monthly rainfall settles to around 100mm, and the air feels noticeably less humid. Clearer skies also mean this is typically the best month for snorkeling and diving visibility.

February has historically seen relatively little tropical-cyclone activity near Guam. NWS Guam notes that cyclones can occur in any month, while most activity near the island is concentrated from August through November. February is usually quieter, but it is not risk-free, so check current forecasts before traveling.

A few things to keep in mind while driving a rental car this month:

• Pack sunglasses and sunscreen — the midday sun is strong this time of year
• Dry roads make for easy driving, but expect heavier traffic and tighter parking around the church on fiesta day
• Clear visibility makes February a great month for a longer scenic drive, from Yigo in the north down to the south
• If you're visiting the grotto or other outdoor sites, plan for direct sun exposure at midday
